Program outline

Introducing Flat Out: Afloat…

Flat Out: Afloat is inspired by Thor Heyerdahl’s expedition to sail a balsa wood raft 4,300 miles from Peru to Polynesia. He set out to prove what many said was impossible: that the people of South America settled in the Pacific islands. After a voyage of over 100 days, he proved his point and silenced his critics forever. Flat Out: Afloat may also appear impossible given the enormity of the task, time restrictions and resources available. As your teams design and construct a seaworthy vessel, they will however soon discover that the impossible becomes very achievable when individuals collaborate and coordinate all their efforts. They will also discover that true leadership and great ideas often come from the colleagues you least expect. An entertaining and rewarding experience, the finale of Flat Out: Afloat can take place on a lake, pool or the open sea. With so many facets and tasks built into this challenge, every team member has a vital role to play in achieving this assignment and making sure that their team ultimately stays afloat!

What will happen during Flat Out: Afloat?

  • Working with detailed plans, your teams must first select a design for their boat.
  • They must then assemble some unlikely building materials (beginning with a ‘flat-pack’ cardboard kit) and work together to turn these into a perfectly seaworthy vessel.
  • Once construction is complete, your teams are then free to make their own design statement by decorating and embellishing their boats with pictures, slogans and flags.
  • These designs may be of their own choosing or they may complement your brand, corporate messages or values.
  • As a grand finale, your teams will take to the water either in a single race, regatta, sea battle or full-blown adventure to recover sunken treasure.
